How To Use Reed Diffusers
22 Nov / 2023Reed diffusers are a great way to make your bathrooms, hallways, foyers, or any room in the house smell fresh and fragrant. Small spaces tend to get stuffy and collect unpleasant scents. Reed diffusers can be easily placed anywhere without worrying about safety concerns as they do not require an open flame, unlike scented candles.
They are quick and efficient and come in a wide range of different scents. You can choose your favorite scent and create a beautiful and delicious-smelling environment in your home within minutes. They also come in exquisite designs and add an elegant touch to your home wherever they are placed.
What Are Reed Diffusers?
Reed diffusers are designed to diffuse the scent into their environment and have three simple parts:
1. Reed Sticks
These are the sticks that disperse the oil from the container into the air
2. Fragrance Oil
This is typically a mixture of essential oils and base solution
3. Container
This is the vessel that is used to hold the oil and the sticks
What Are Reed Sticks Made Out Of?
Reed sticks are thinly shaped sticks of wood that are porous in nature. They have channels running through them to allow the fragrant oil to be soaked by the stick on one end, dipped into the oil, and dispersed into the air through the opposite end exposed to the air.
The most popularly used material for reed sticks is rattan. Rattan is a woody vine that is hollow on the inside but contains channels that are able to absorb and transport the oil within it. Ideally reed sticks should be about 4 mm thick and not more. The thicker the sticks are, the thicker the scent will be in the room, and the faster the oil will evaporate from the container. Ideally, thinner sticks should be used to have a mild scent in the room and allow the oil to last a long time.
Flipping the reeds often is a good idea to prevent them from becoming clogged and losing their diffusing ability. Reeds sticks should be changed every six months to ensure you get the most out of your diffuser oil.
If you run out of rattan reed sticks, you can also use bamboo skewer sticks that are easily available at home. All you have to do is chop a tiny bit of the tips of the bamboo stick and dip it into the diffuser oil, which also works as a great substitute.
How Do They Work?
Reed diffuser sticks do not need to be lit; they work by naturally soaking up the fragrance oil and dispersing it into the air as tiny droplets. Due to the porous nature of the reed sticks, the oil travels within the reed stick and disperses out the other end into the air.
How To Use Reed Diffusers?
If you are using a reed diffuser for the first time, you can follow these simple steps to get the best out of your reed diffusers:
1. Place a paper towel or a napkin on the surface before placing your diffuser container to avoid making a mess with spills
2. In case your diffuser did not come with the oil inside, you must pour your bottle of the fragrance oil into the container and fill it to about half or three-quarters. Do not fill it to the top as there might be spills
3. Take about 6 to 8 reed sticks and insert them into the container with the oil
4. Give it about ten minutes to become saturated with the oil, and then carefully flip it over to dip the dry ends into the oil
5. Space the reeds out to allow air to pass through them for better dispersal into the environment.
6. Flip your reed sticks every week to reduce clogging of the sticks due to over saturation and dust
