A Step By Step Guide To Making Scented Candles
Making scented candles is fairly easy and can be done at home. You can get the supplies depending on the type of candle you want. The three main ingredients that go in a scented candle are
● Candle wax
● Fragrance oil
● Candlewick
It is up to you to choose which type of candle wax you want to use and your choice of fragrant or essential oil. Candle wicks are usually just one type and are easily available. Extra bits to add to your scented candle are dyes, rose petals, glitter, or any item you choose.
The Different Types Of Candle Wax
Paraffin Wax
The most common type of candle wax in use. It can be used to make all types of candles as it is the most affordable kind. But it is not eco-friendly as it produces the most amount of soot and burns quickly.
Soy Wax
This is 100 percent natural and plant-based wax which is environmentally friendly and is great for holding fragrances. It is, however, a bit more pricey and does not color easily. it burns much more slowly than paraffin wax; therefore, it makes up for its higher price. They are excellent for use and are safer and healthier as they do not produce harmful toxins or soot as they burn, and they also make the longest burning candles.
Bees Wax
Beeswax is obtained from bees during the honey-making process and is an all-natural and organic wax. It is not vegan but has a clean and slow burn and holds fragrances well. It is one of the safest and cleanest waxes to use for candle making.
Coconut Wax
Coconut wax is made from refined and hydrogenated coconut oil. It is considered one of the healthiest and cleanest of all candle waxes but expensive. It also has a clean and slow-burning quality and is able to hold and maintain fragrance oils well within it.
Palm Wax
Hydrogenation of palm oils produces palm wax. It holds fragrance oils and dyes well and is great for candle making. As it cools, it creates crystallization and feathering patterns in the wax, adding beautiful texture to the candles.
Gel Wax
Gel wax is not exactly wax and is obtained from polymer resin and mineral oil. It creates a transparent, see-through candle within which colorful objects can be embedded to add to the beauty of the candle. It can hold color, fragrance and wick just as well as the standard paraffin wax.
Things That You Will Need:
● Candle wax
● Double Boiler
● Candle molds or glass containers
● Dyes or colored crayons
● Fragrant oil
● Thermometer
● Candlewick
● Super glue
● Spatula
● A pair of chopsticks
The Method
Step 1
First, you need to melt your candle wax in the double boiler. Make sure to keep checking the temperature to reach the temperature at which the wax melts according to the package instructions depending on the wax used. Once the wax has melted, make sure to give it a good stir to distribute the heat evenly
Step 2
Next, add the fragrance or essential oil to the wax. Make sure that the wax is not too hot otherwise, there is a risk of burning off the fragrance oil. Remember to use one ounce of oil for every pound of wax you have used. If you want a colored candle, then you may add candle dye or crayons in the color of your choice into the melted wax to give a lovely hue to your finished candle.
Step 3
Prepare your candle mold or heat proof glass vessel. Use super glue or a little bit of molten wax to stick the candle wick at the base of the candle mold. If you want to add flower petals or any other additions to your scented candle, you may stick them to the sides of your vessel.
Step 4
Wait for melted, prepared wax to cool down to 140 degrees before you begin pouring it in to the vessel. Gently pour the melted wax in to the container while you hold the candle wick straight and in place as you pour. Do not fill it to the top, and keep holding the wick in place. Save a little melted wax in the boiler for the finishing step on the candle. To hold the wick in place, you may use two chopsticks with the wick held in between them to keep it in place.
Step 5
Allow your candle to rest and cool for 4 hours. Once it has completely cooled, you may trim the candle wick if it is too long and heat and pour the remaining wax on top of the cooled candle to give a clean and finished look to your candle. It is now ready for use.
